Power Quality

Monitoring Points in Accordance with IEC 61000-4-30

A list of parameters to monitor, standardized terminology for definitions, and guidance for interpreting data are provided.

The IEC 61000-4-30 standard defines the measurement methods for the parameters required to qualify distributed electrical voltage. It includes definitions of voltage, variation, …, and other disturbance criteria. It primarily references two other standards:

  • IEC 61000-4-7 for measurements of parameters related to waveform distortions (harmonics, waveform, etc.).

  • IEC 61000-4-15 for voltage flicker.

Power quality depends on at least a dozen key parameters of the power supply, including the frequency and voltage variations mentioned above. However, the most critical factor is waveform distortion or harmonic content. Harmonic voltages can cause malfunctions in sensitive equipment: circuit breaker detection circuits, inverter switches, and conductor overheating.

The solutions offered by Chauvin Arnoux ensure compliance with the limits defined in Europe by the EN 50160 standard, which specifies the acceptable variation limits and the number of tolerated events.

A transformer’s load level must also be monitored in the presence of harmonics. The K-factor defines the derating factor for this power source.
